EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- Dangers associated with the use of phytosanitary products: Farmers are exposed to the chemical hazards of the plant protection products they use (fungicides, insecticides, herbicides, etc.) either orally, through the respiratory tract, and/or through the skin. Mainly during product preparation, spraying, cleaning, tank emptying, and in the event of sprayer malfunction. Firstly, there is the risk of acute intoxication in the event of accidental exposure, which can cause skin, digestive, respiratory, muscular, nervous and cardiovascular disorders. But the most harmful is frequent, prolonged exposure to low doses (chronic intoxication), which can cause nervous system disorders, carcinogenic and mutagenic effects, and endocrine disruption.
- The danger of being crushed by falling loads or overturning machinery (agricultural machinery): Farmers use a wide range of farm machinery and attachments. All these machines can be a source of crushing in two cases: they contain a load likely to fall, or the agricultural machinery risks overturning (e.g. slope, ditch). The risk arises mainly when transporting loads with a poorly secured hitch and/or when operating on sloping, uneven and/or overhanging ground. Possible injuries include cuts, crushing, amputations, infections and even death. To reduce these risks, when carrying loads, always take the time to secure them properly on the hitch. What's more, before setting off on a slope, slope or rutted road, take the time to walk over it to assess the risk of overturning.
- Danger from exposure to biological agents: Farmers are exposed to bacteria, viruses and animals in a number of ways: wounds soiled by contaminated soil (tetanus), animal bites (snake venom), insect stings (wasps, hornets). There may also be allergies to pollen or insects (caterpillars, wasps, hornets). The risk is greatest when working outdoors, particularly during the peak spring and summer seasons. The main risks are contamination by virus or bacteria, with all the associated symptoms (e.g. for tetanus: shivering, sweating, convulsion, difficulty swallowing, headache, sore throat, stiffness). There is also the risk of attacks by various animals such as bees, wasps, hornets and snakes. To reduce these risks, it's important to keep all mandatory vaccinations up to date, especially tetanus.
- Dangers associated with the use of chemical fertilizers: Farmers use nitrogen fertilizers (mainly in the form of ammonium nitrate), which entail health risks. The risk is mainly present when chemical fertilizers are spread on farmland, during certain handling operations, or when they are re-suspended from the site where they are deposited. The main danger from fertilizers is posed by ammonium nitrate particles, which are very fine and can penetrate the lungs. Inhalation of this dust can cause nasopharyngeal and tracheal irritation, mucous membrane and respiratory tract irritation, coughing and breathing difficulties. Dust can also cause eye irritation.
