EXCERPTS FROM OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT FOR FREIGHT BY HEAVY GOODS VEHICLES
- The danger of falling from heights when loading and unloading goods: When getting on and off their trucks, or when loading and unloading goods, drivers can potentially fall from heights. In most cases, these falls occur from the cab, trailer or tailgate of the truck (if equipped). Depending on the configuration of the customer's premises, he may also fall from a loading bay. The risk of falling from a height is greater on rainy days, as the various surfaces where drivers will be working are slippery (trailer, loading bay, tailgate, etc.). Rushing while loading and unloading a truck, doing several tasks at once (e.g. answering the phone), or walking backwards with one's back to empty space are additional factors in falls. Damage caused by falls from height can include impact with the ground, an object below, or a nearby person. This can result in contusions, fractures, internal and/or external haemorrhaging, and head trauma that can plunge the person into a coma. In rare cases, falls can cause irreversible damage (e.g. spinal column leading to quadriplegia) or even death.
- The danger of manual handling when loading and unloading goods: HGV drivers are regularly required to load and unload goods, which involves manual handling. When carried out by hand without handling aids, particularly on goods that are heavy or difficult to lift due to a lack of grip, such handling can cause short- and long-term physical damage. For truck drivers, only the use of handling aids can drastically reduce handling-related risks. Carrying goods by hand instead of using handling aids (e.g. hand truck, pallet truck) is therefore a critical factor. If it is not possible to use handling aids, carrying loads without respecting proper handling postures is an aggravating factor. In the short term, manual handling will cause muscular and joint pain, particularly in the wrists, arms, shoulders and back. In the long term, manual handling can lead to Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) in the upper limbs, notably lesions in the spine, shoulders (tendinopathy) and wrists (carpal tunnel syndrome).
- The danger of pinching and crushing limbs when loading and unloading goods: Drivers must regularly move the goods they transport. First of all, when loading, the goods must be carefully positioned to maximize the loading volume of the trailer. Then, when unloading, they have to pick up the customer's goods and drop them off. The movement of goods exposes drivers to the risk of pinching and crushing limbs (mainly hands and feet). The risk of pinching or crushing limbs arises mainly when handling heavy or bulky goods in confined spaces. Handling loads without wearing heavy gloves and safety shoes increases the risk of crushing and pinching hands and feet. Working in a hurry is a further risk factor.
