EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT

  • The danger of prolonged static sitting: An insurer's job involves spending a great deal of time in a seated position, particularly when processing policyholder files. For insurers, this means sitting in a prolonged static position for almost seven hours a day, when in the office. Remaining in this static position is a vector of various physical health risks. The risks associated with working in a prolonged seated position are present on an almost daily basis for insurers. Certain risk factors, such as not taking regular breaks during the working day to change posture (e.g. standing up), or working with unsuitable or badly-adjusted office furniture (e.g. a desk chair that is too high or a desk that is too low, forcing you to bend forward), are aggravating factors. Prolonged sitting is a vector of various Musculoskeletal Disorders, such as neck stiffness and pain, sometimes leading to osteoarthritis, muscular pain in the trapezius area of the upper back, as well as varicose veins and venous circulation disorders. Lack of movement also has an effect on heart fitness and the shape of the body as a whole.

  • The danger of meeting targets and the resulting managerial stress: Insurance agency staff are subject to a certain amount of managerial stress as a result of the need to meet certain performance targets, particularly with regard to the number of policyholders in the firm. Indeed, the general insurance agent, and more broadly the firm and its employees, are endowed with a certain portfolio of customers which it is necessary to make grow, or at least not to erode, in order to guarantee the firm's financial viability. The risks associated with managerial stress are present on a daily basis in insurance agencies. Certain factors are particularly conducive to increasing day-to-day stress for employees: the setting of targets that are too ambitious to be achievable, overloaded schedules that leave employees no room for manoeuvre in the event of unforeseen circumstances, failure to respect the right to disconnect, and so on. The possible damage caused by managerial stress is a deterioration in the working atmosphere, irritability, stress, anxiety, problems with eating habits (e.g.: comforting snacking, with an impact on health such as obesity), increased risk of attraction and dependence on psychotropic substances offering comfort (medication, tobacco, drugs), or even Burn-Out.

  • The danger of emotional stress resulting from contact with policyholders: The insurer's job exposes him to a certain psychological burden, resulting from the need to mask his feelings and emotions during claims or disputes with policyholders, all the more so as the job requires constant availability and listening to policyholders. These risks are particularly present when the insurer has to work with a difficult customer, whether in terms of interpersonal relations (haughty, rude) or demands (contract prices, response time to requests, etc.). If exchanges between staff and a difficult customer take place in connection with a claim, and particularly if the claim is not covered by insurance, the risks associated with emotional tensions are increased. The main risks are damage to psychological health, such as stress, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, health problems (e.g. insomnia), eating disorders (e.g. snacking for comfort, with health implications such as obesity) and increased risk of attraction and dependence on psychotropic substances offering comfort (e.g. medication, tobacco, drugs).

"The document, of high quality and customizable, is an excellent starting point for a topic that often takes up a lot of time. Thank you also for listening to our needs and the customer follow-up!"

"High-quality service at a very competitive price - the company fully adapted to my business and its multiple risks. This document was also reviewed by the labor inspection, which approved the quality of the work. I recommend."

I recommend the occupational risk assessment documents for their ease of use (Excel workbook) and the relevance of risks listed by profession.
