EXCERPTS FROM OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT FOR NURSERIES

  • The danger of significant physical effort: Nursery staff in charge of children have to put in a lot of physical effort during their working day. Mainly when carrying children, caring for babies, moving objects such as cribs, carts, etc. Possible damage includes musculoskeletal disorders and periarticular affections: low back pain, intervertebral disc damage, ligament damage (tendonitis in the elbow and/or shoulder), sciatic nerve pain, chronic meniscus damage.

  • The danger of awkward postures: Nursery staff in charge of children frequently have to adopt awkward working postures, such as squatting or bending forward. This risk is present all day long, due to the size of the children and the size of the furniture and equipment available to them. Awkward postures contribute to the development of injuries caused by heavy physical effort: Musculoskeletal disorders and periarticular affections: lumbago, intervertebral disc injuries, ligament injuries (tendonitis in the elbow and/or shoulder), sciatic nerve pain, chronic meniscus injuries.

  • Noise hazard: Day nursery staff in charge of children can be subject to significant noise hazards due to children's cries and screams. The risk is present all day long. It is proportional to the number of children in the crèche. In the short term, it generates stress and fatigue. In the long term, exposure to noise leads to progressive occupational deafness, which most people are unaware of. This deafness is accompanied by numerous undesirable effects: tinnitus, whistling, buzzing, vertigo and migraines. The risks associated with noise are difficult to reduce at source, since most of them come from children. It also seems difficult to fit PPE against noise, as this creates a barrier between nursery staff and children. It is therefore preferable to seek to reduce noise pollution by technical means, such as acoustic treatment of rooms.

  • Postural hazards - prolonged standing: Day-care staff in charge of children spend most of their time in a standing position. This creates a risk of injury, which is reinforced by the fact that they are walking on the ground. The risk is present all year round among nursery staff. It increases in proportion to the time spent standing and the shorter the distance covered (trampling).
