EXCERPTS FROM OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT FOR PASSENGER TRANSPORT BY COACH
- The danger of long periods in a seated posture: This is a constraint inherent to the driver's job and linked to his or her working posture: drivers have to drive for long hours at a time in a seated position. The risk is present every day for coach drivers. The risk increases in proportion to the number of driving hours accumulated during the driver's career. Possible injuries include overweight (lack of activity), back pain, neck pain, cruralgia, herniated discs (sciatica), joint pain, muscle pain and even numbness. To reduce these risks, you need to adjust your driving position (seat, steering wheel, mirrors). Respect break times.
- The danger of inhaling exhaust fumes: Coach drivers are exposed to the pollution generated by other vehicles, in particular diesel and petrol exhaust fumes (carbon monoxide + nitrogen oxide, as well as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons PAH). Bus drivers are at risk all year round. More specifically, the risk depends on the areas crossed, the pollutant emissions of the vehicles the coach will be following, and the time of exposure. Possible damage includes cancer, mutations and attacks on the reproductive system (exhaust gases release molecules including CMRs). If the vehicle being followed by the coach emits high levels of pollutants, switch on the air recirculation system and/or move to a safe distance.
- Handling hazards: Drivers have to carry out handling operations when loading and unloading passengers' luggage in the coach's hold. The risk is present all year round. It is proportional to the number of passengers, the quantity of luggage and the weight of the luggage carried by each person. Possible injuries include muscle and back pain. To reduce handling-related risks, employees need to be reminded of the correct handling postures: bend the knees and keep the back straight when picking up loads from the ground. To stand up, straighten the legs while keeping the back straight and pressing the load against the abdominal muscles. You can also take training course.
- The danger of road accidents: Coach drivers are on the road almost the entire working day. Road accidents still account for 25% of fatal workplace accidents in France, and are the leading cause of death in the workplace.) The risk is particularly high when driving conditions are poor (rain/cold), when the road surface is degraded, and/or when the driver's concentration is impaired (fatigue, alcohol, psychotropic drugs). Some drivers may also be tempted to ignore the Highway Code in the event of delays. The potential damage is accidents, collisions, injuries, contusions, crushing, amputations and even death. To reduce these risks, we need to pay particular attention to driver training (D license, FIMO voyageur, FCOS), passing the medical examination, organizing and planning journeys, avoiding the use of psychotropic drugs and alcohol, respecting break times, complying with the Highway Code (e.g. telephone at the wheel), and maintaining and monitoring the condition of coaches.
