EXCERPTS FROM OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT FOR RECRUITMENT AGENCIES

  • The hazard of prolonged sitting: Working in a recruitment agency means having to spend a great deal of time in a seated position, particularly for all the tasks involved in recruiting candidates: CV analysis, interviewing, drafting and signing employment contracts, and so on. This means that recruiters have to sit in a static position for almost seven hours a day, which is detrimental to their health in both the short and long term. The risks associated with working in a prolonged seated position will be heightened if the ergonomics of the workstation are poor. For example, the use of a traditional chair without seat height adjustment and/or backrest tilt adjustment is an aggravating factor. Using an office or ergonomic chair can reduce these risks, but only if it has been adjusted to suit the user's morphology. Prolonged sitting is a vector of various Musculoskeletal Disorders, such as neck stiffness and pain, sometimes leading to osteoarthritis, muscular pain in the trapezius area of the upper back, as well as varicose veins and venous circulation disorders. Over the long term, lack of movement also has adverse effects on cardiac fitness, and on the shape of the body as a whole.

  • The hazard of prolonged work on computer screenWorking in a recruitment agency today requires the daily use of a computer: consulting profiles, sorting applications, and exchanging information with candidates and customers (e-mails, videoconferencing) are increasingly digitized, via web interfaces or software. The result of this daily use of the computer is prolonged exposure to screens, which represents a source of physical risks that are certain in the short term, and possible in the long term. The risks associated with computer work depend on a number of factors: the distance between the user and the screen, the brightness of the screen and the brightness of the workroom, the type of screen used (LCD, OLED, cathode-ray, etc.). If you don't take a break to rest your eyes during the working day, staring into the distance increases the risk of visual fatigue, discomfort and loss of concentration. The main possible risks associated with prolonged computer screen use in the short term are fatigue, irritability, headaches, blurred vision, eyestrain and dry eyes. The use of close-up vision when working on a computer could potentially favour certain vision disorders, but this has not yet been demonstrated.

  • The hazard of emotional tension- stress: Working in a recruitment agency involves a certain amount of professional stress, resulting from the commercial aspect of the job: when a customer (company) has a human resources requirement, the recruitment agency has to do its best to find the candidate who will meet this need. This search for a candidate, via the recruitment process, will be a source of pressure, due to the time constraints set by the company, but also to the profiles available (skills, training). The risks associated with emotional tensions are heightened when the recruitment agency works for a company with difficult interpersonal skills (e.g. criticism of the recruitment skills of the agency's staff if a previous candidate failed to convince the employer) or with criteria that are particularly difficult to satisfy (very tight deadlines for finding a candidate for the position, search for a very specific profile, remuneration well below the sector average, etc.). The main risks are damage to psychological health, such as stress, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, lifestyle problems (insomnia), eating disorders (e.g. comforting snacking, with health implications such as obesity) and increased risk of attraction and dependence on psychotropic substances offering comfort (medication, tobacco, drugs) or even Burn-Out.
