EXCERPTS FROM OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT FOR REMOVAL COMPANIES

  • The danger of awkward postures: Movers regularly work in confined spaces, which requires them to adopt awkward postures. (twisting, shifting, lifting, crouching, kneeling, arms in the air, at arm's length, trunk bent forward). Movers are at risk all year round. It depends in particular on the accessibility of houses/apartments, the space available, etc. Awkward postures aggravate the risk of osteo-articular pathologies caused by manual handling (back, upper and lower limb, extremity and abdominal wall problems). To reduce risks, provide staff with the most practical equipment possible to avoid awkward postures.

  • The danger of manual handling: Movers are required to manually handle furniture and objects during removals. Movers are at risk all year round. The risk is increased by several factors: the weight transported and the handling distance. Back problems (lumbosciatica, cervicalgia, herniated discs), but also of the upper and lower limbs. (sprains, tendinitis, podalgia) or extremities (jammed fingers) or abdominal wall (inguinal hernia). The profession is affected by a high number of cases of professional incapacity due to osteoarticular problems.

  • Mechanical handling hazards: Movers may use lifting and unloading equipment (cranes, tailboards, furniture lifts, pallet trucks). The risk arises if unsuitable lifting equipment is chosen. Damage can be caused by the load falling or tipping over sideways. This can lead to haematomas, fractures and amputations. To reduce this risk, use technical aids adapted to the handling task in hand. Handling equipment must comply with current standards, be periodically inspected, and be adapted to the load to be lifted, the floor surface and the gradient.

  • The danger of pinching and crushing: Movers can suffer pinching and/or crushing of limbs when handling objects, furniture or lifting equipment. The risk is mainly present during manual handling, but also during mechanical handling with lifting equipment. Possible injuries include bruising, cuts, pinching and even crushing of limbs. To limit the risk of pinching and crushing, provide personnel with safety shoes and thick leather handling gloves.
