EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT

  • The danger of road accidents: Sales staff are required to use their vehicles frequently, with high standards of efficiency and punctuality. They travel long distances all year round, even in poor traffic conditions, to reach company customers. (Road accidents still account for 25% of fatal workplace accidents in France, and are the leading cause of death in the workplace). These risks are present all year round, and particularly so in poor traffic conditions such as autumn and winter. Having a busy schedule and/or trying to make up for lost time on the road when unforeseen circumstances arise increases the likelihood of an accident. Doing other tasks while driving, such as answering the phone or checking e-mail, also increases the risk of an accident. The main types of damage possible are single-vehicle road accidents, or those involving other vehicles and/or cyclists and pedestrians in the worst case. These collisions can result in a variety of injuries: haematomas, wounds, fractures of one or more bones, crushing of one or more limbs, coma or even death of one or more persons.

  • The danger of emotional tension when dealing with customers: The sales profession is exposed to a certain psychological burden, resulting from the need to mask feelings and emotions during negotiations and customer complaints. This can lead to feelings of incomprehension, powerlessness and resignation, especially as the job requires constant availability and listening to customers. These risks are particularly present when the salesperson has to work with a difficult company, whether in terms of relationships (unpleasant staff) or demands (deadlines, prices, etc.). The main risks are damage to psychological health, such as stress, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, lifestyle problems (insomnia), eating disorders (e.g. comfort food, with health implications such as obesity) and increased risk of attraction and dependence on psychotropic substances offering comfort (medication, tobacco, drugs).

  • The danger of managerial stress: Sales people can be under considerable pressure, because in addition to satisfying their customers, they also have to satisfy their own hierarchy. This can lead to complex situations where expectations are incompatible. What's more, the company's financial results will depend in part on the work of its sales staff, which is an additional source of stress. The risks are even greater when there are strong contradictions between the demands of customers and those of management. In addition, the risks are even greater if there are high sales targets, long working hours and/or a hierarchy that is very attentive to sales results. Finally, having a management team that demands constant availability from its sales staff is an additional stress factor for the latter. The possible damage caused by managerial stress is a deterioration in the working atmosphere, irritability, stress, anxiety, problems with food hygiene (e.g.: comfort eating, with health implications such as obesity), increased risk of attraction and dependence on psychotropic substances offering comfort (medication, tobacco, drugs), or even Burn-Out.

"The document, of high quality and customizable, is an excellent starting point for a topic that often takes up a lot of time. Thank you also for listening to our needs and the customer follow-up!"

"High-quality service at a very competitive price - the company fully adapted to my business and its multiple risks. This document was also reviewed by the labor inspection, which approved the quality of the work. I recommend."

I recommend the occupational risk assessment documents for their ease of use (Excel workbook) and the relevance of risks listed by profession.
