EXCERPTS FROM OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT FOR SUPERMARKETS
- The danger of manual handling during shelf-stacking: When stocking shelves, supermarket employees have to handle large quantities of products, which represents a considerable weight. Mainly when putting new products on the shelves. The risk is proportional to the quantity of products handled and the weight involved. Possible damage is Musculoskeletal Disorders affecting muscles, tendons and nerves in the upper limbs (shoulders, elbows, wrists) as well as the spine.
- The danger of repetitive movements at the cashier's station: The cashier's job requires a number of repetitive gestures, including pulling items towards you and pushing them away from you. The risk is present all year round for checkout staff. In particular, it depends on the amount of time spent at the checkout, the quantity of items pulled/pushed and the weight involved. Possible damage includes Musculoskeletal disorders (formerly known as periarticular affections) in the upper limbs: wrists (carpal tunnel syndrome), elbows (epicondylitis), shoulders (tendonitis).
The danger of awkward postures - crouching or forced extension: Store shelving staff have to work in awkward postures, such as kneeling to fill the lower shelves, or in forced extension to fill the upper shelves. Mainly when stocking shelves, when it comes to feeding the bottom or top shelves of the store. The risk is proportional to the time spent and the weight handled. Possible damage includes joint pain (knees), circulatory problems, back pain and muscle aches.
The danger of being hit or crushed by a delivery vehicle: The retail sector mainly uses heavy goods vehicles to deliver goods. During loading and unloading operations, employees are exposed to crushing hazards. The risk is mainly present when heavy goods vehicles maneuver on the delivery area and loading/unloading dock.
