EXCERPTS FROM THE HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT
- The danger of prolonged static sitting: Cab drivers are forced to remain in a prolonged static seated position during all phases of driving their vehicles. According to data from the Fédération Nationale des Taxis Indépendants (FNTI), 70% of a cab driver's working time is devoted to driving. Remaining in this prolonged static seated position for several hours at a time is a vector of various physical health risks. The risks associated with prolonged sitting are more likely to affect the driver if he spends several hours at the wheel, without getting out of his vehicle. Incorrect adjustment of the driver's seat increases the risk of prolonged sitting posture (seat back tilted back by a maximum of 20°, torso and legs at an angle of around 90°). Last but not least, the driver's arm is almost outstretched when gripping the top of the steering wheel at the back of the seat). Prolonged sitting can lead to a number of Musculoskeletal Disorders, such as neck stiffness and pain, sometimes with the onset of osteoarthritis, muscular pain in the trapezius area of the upper back, as well as varicose veins and venous circulation disorders. Prolonged sitting in a static position also has an effect on cardiac fitness and the shape of the body as a whole, due to a lack of movement.
- Risks associated with baggage handling: Every day, cab drivers have to carry out a great deal of baggage handling. This is an integral part of the job, from having to load customers' luggage into the cab's trunk at the start of each journey, to having to unload it from the trunk once they've arrived at their destination. The weight to be handled is potentially considerable, up to 25kg per suitcase. Handling risks are generally higher with tourists, who travel with suitcases that can weigh a lot. Business travellers are also likely to carry heavy suitcases. In addition to the weight handled, the way in which loads are carried (good / bad handling postures) will have a major influence on the occurrence of both short-term and long-term damage. Like all manual handling operations, baggage handling is responsible for back and muscle pain in the short term. Over the long term, baggage handling is responsible for Musculoskeletal Disorders of the upper limbs: shoulder tendinopathy, elbow epicondylitis, carpal tunnel syndrome of the wrists, etc.
- Risks associated with physical aggression: Taxi drivers can be the target of physical aggression. These physical assaults can come from customers who are dissatisfied with the service, for a variety of reasons: price deemed excessive, transport time deemed too long, etc. But cab drivers can also be physically attacked by thieves, due to the fact that some cab fares are paid for in cash. These physical assaults can occur at any time. What's more, it's never possible to predict with any certainty what the relationship with a customer will be like when they get into a cab. Situations of aggression will depend on both the customer and the journey, as certain factors of dissatisfaction are totally beyond the driver's control: traffic jams, roadworks, etc. Possible physical damage resulting from physical aggression includes bruising, fractures and haemorrhaging. In addition, the incident can lead to psychosocial problems: stress, anxiety, loss of self-confidence, lifestyle problems (insomnia), eating disorders (e.g. comforting snacking, with health implications such as obesity) and increased risk of attraction and dependence on psychotropic substances offering comfort (medication, tobacco, drugs).
