EXCERPTS FROM OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT FOR TRAVEL AGENCIES
- The danger of working at too high a tempo: Travel agents may resent the fact that they have to work in a hurry, because of the absolute necessity of meeting customer deadlines and dealing with any unforeseen circumstances. Working under these conditions for too long is a major factor in stress and other psychosocial risks. There's no particular time of year. It can happen at any time, especially when there are major unforeseen events. The possible damage is as follows Degradation of the working atmosphere, stress, anxiety, irritability, even burn-out. Try to spread work out over the year if possible. If the pace of work becomes unbearable, stop accepting new customers or postpone appointments to a later date. Have enough staff to meet customer demand in a calm atmosphere.
- The danger of emotional strain when dealing with customers: Travel agents are subject to a heavy psychological burden: the need to mask their feelings and emotions when dealing with customer complaints, difficulties with a particularly demanding customer, etc. In extreme cases, this could lead to a feeling of incomprehension, or even powerlessness and resignation on the part of some travel agents, all the more so as the job requires listening to and understanding the customer. This can happen at any time of the year, and particularly during peak periods. The possible damage is as follows Degradation of the working atmosphere, stress, anxiety, irritability, insomnia, addictive behavior (alcohol, drugs), depression, even burn-out. It's important to take regular breaks outside the workspace to let off pressure and stress (e.g. 5 minutes outdoors every hour). There are various methods for regulating emotions and preventing stress-related damage, such as cardiac coherence and mindfulness meditation. In times of difficulty, it's important not to close in on yourself, and to find people you can trust to talk to. It's also important to know when to stop if you're suffering too much, and to consult a health professional.
- The danger of remoteness and isolation on prospecting trips: Travel agents have to work alone when traveling long distances on prospecting trips. This isolation makes them more vulnerable to certain pathologies (e.g. anxiety attacks), and can lead to risky behavior on long missions, such as overeating, alcohol consumption and psychotropic drugs. The risk is increased by the geographical distance from the family environment, and the length of the mission. The risk is also greater if travel agents leave for a country with a foreign language with which they are unfamiliar. The main possible damage is an increased risk of developing psychosomatic disorders: fatigue, stress, anxiety, cardiovascular risk. For long-distance travel, having a flexible schedule and avoiding rushed journeys can help limit psychosocial risks. Allow sufficient recovery time to recuperate from the fatigue generated by the most demanding journeys.
