EXCERPTS FROM OUR HEALTH AND SAFETY RISK ASSESSMENT FOR WINEGROWERS
- The danger of repetitive movements: Winegrowers are required to make numerous repetitive gestures when maintaining their vineyards, in particular when pruning, trellising, bending and cutting with hand tools, but also when tying, tying up, lifting and thinning out leaves by hand. The risk is particularly high when vine maintenance work is carried out in cold (winter), damp or hot (summer) conditions. Possible damage is Musculoskeletal Disorders (formerly known as periarticular affections) in the upper limbs: wrists (carpal tunnel syndrome), elbows (epicondylitis), shoulders (tendonitis). In the worst cases, this leads to premature ageing of osteo-articular structures, which can result in professional incapacity. This is now recognized as an occupational disease in the winegrowing sector, due to the large number of professionals affected. To reduce these risks, we recommend using power tools instead of hand tools whenever possible (e.g. electric pruning shears). The hazards associated with repetitive movements can also be effectively and simply reduced by carrying out rapid maintenance on cutting tools: lubricate moving mechanisms and sharpen cutting blades.
- The danger of awkward working postures: Winegrowers have to work in awkward postures (bent back, squatting) when maintaining their vines (pruning, trellising, bending, cutting). The more the vines are on a hillside or slope, the more awkward the posture. The risks are all the greater when working in low temperatures (winter), wet conditions or high temperatures (summer). Damage can include musculoskeletal disorders (formerly known as periarticular affections) of the back (spinal column with cervicalgia, lumbago), and of the lower limbs with traumas to the knees and ankles (sprains). Premature ageing of osteo-articular structures can lead to professional incapacity recognized as an occupational disease by the health insurance scheme under Table 39 (Agricultural Scheme).
- The danger of prolonged standing: Winegrowers are required to be in a prolonged static standing position for much of the time when they are working on vine maintenance (pruning, trellising, bending, cutting). The risk is particularly high when vine maintenance work is carried out in cold (winter), damp or hot conditions (summer). Potential damage includes musculoskeletal disorders (formerly known as periarticular affections) of the back (spinal column with cervicalgia, lumbago), and of the lower limbs with traumas to the knees and ankles (sprains). To avoid prolonged standing, it is possible to use single-leg vineyard chairs that can be adjusted to work sitting upright.
